About EngravReady — Laser Engraving Image Prep

The free tool that bridges the gap between your photos and your laser engraver

What is EngravReady?

EngravReady is a free, browser-based image preparation tool built specifically for laser engraving. It takes your photos and converts them into optimized greyscale or pure black-and-white images that are ready to send straight to your laser engraver or cutter.

Most laser engraving software expects images in a specific format — high-contrast greyscale or 1-bit black and white — but most photos aren't anywhere close to that. EngravReady bridges that gap with an intuitive set of controls and a real-time preview so you can see exactly what your engraving will look like before you burn a single line.

Who is it for?

Key Features

Real-Time Processing

See your changes instantly as you adjust brightness, contrast, highlights, shadows, and threshold. No waiting, no "apply" button.

Greyscale & B/W Modes

Switch between greyscale (for variable-power engraving) and pure black-and-white (for on/off engraving) with a single click.

Floyd-Steinberg Dithering

Convert photos to detailed 1-bit images using error-diffusion dithering — ideal for diode lasers that only support on/off power.

🌳

Wood Preview

See how your image will look burned onto Pine, Walnut, Cherry, Maple, or Bamboo before you commit to the engrave.

🔒

100% Private

Your images never leave your browser. All processing happens locally on your device — nothing is uploaded to any server.

📥

High-DPI Export

Export at 300, 600, or 1000 DPI in PNG or JPG format, ready to import into LightBurn, LaserGRBL, xTool Creative Space, or any laser software.

How It Works

EngravReady uses the HTML5 Canvas API to process your images entirely in the browser. When you upload a photo, it goes through a carefully ordered processing pipeline:

  1. Greyscale conversion using the standard luminance formula (0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B) for accurate tonal representation.
  2. Brightness and contrast adjustments to dial in the overall exposure.
  3. Highlights and shadows controls to fine-tune the bright and dark areas independently.
  4. Inversion (optional) to flip dark and light — useful for engraving on dark materials.
  5. Thresholding or dithering (in B/W mode) to convert to pure black and white.

The result is an image optimized for the way laser engravers actually work — whether your machine uses variable power (greyscale) or on/off pulsing (black and white).

No Installation Required

EngravReady is a single-page web application with zero external dependencies. There's nothing to install, no account to create, and no software to update. Just open the page, drop in your image, and start tweaking. It works on any modern browser — desktop or mobile.

Open & Free

EngravReady is free to use. The site is supported by advertising. We believe that basic image prep for laser engraving should be accessible to everyone, not locked behind expensive software subscriptions.
